For the Haworth + Cappellini flagship showroom, the brief was to create an environment that didn’t just display furniture but celebrated it. Operating under a JCT Design & Build contract, LFO executed a comprehensive strip-out and transformation of a ground and basement retail unit. The goal was to create a seamless journey for architects, designers, and corporate clients, blending high-end retail aesthetics with the functional requirements of a working commercial furniture dealership.
The Mirror Ceiling and Steel Staircase – The architectural centrepiece of the project is a bespoke feature steel staircase that serves as a multi-level gallery for the brand’s iconic chair ranges. To overcome the natural light limitations of a basement level, LFO engineered a “Mirror Ceiling” installation above the stairwell. This innovative feature reflects natural daylight from the ground-floor windows deep into the lower level, while simultaneously creating a dramatic visual effect that showcases the designer products from multiple angles, enhancing their form and materiality.
The ‘Front of House’ Experience: Upon entry, clients are greeted by an impressive, custom-formed reception desk surrounded by curated displays of product fabrics and design literature. LFO designed the floorplate to be fluid, featuring expansive open zones where Cappellini’s world-renowned furniture can be showcased in situ. To support private consultations, we installed a premium Italian-branded glazing system to form sleek meeting rooms and executive offices. These spaces were complemented by a bespoke “feature lighting” scheme, strategically designed to highlight the textures and contours of the furniture “centrepieces” on display.
The project extended to a complete overhaul of the shop front, utilising high-specification glazing and signage to create an “arresting” presence for the many design professionals who walk the Clerkenwell streets daily. Internally, LFO ensured the team behind the brand was equally well-catered for, delivering a modern staff tea point and a vibrant breakout area. By successfully delivering this high-specification 8-week build, LFO proved its ability to translate luxury Italian design language into a physical retail reality that drives brand prestige and commercial success.
